I was thinking about the main event angle I'm running in my game, and how much I'm enjoying it, and it got me to thinking. We've all been playing for some time, obviously, and we've all run countless angles. Some were good. Some weren't.
But what was your best one? Not necessarily the most OVER angle, but what do you think was the best written angle?
For me, it was in my old ECW game. There was a huge supporting cast, but when it came down to it, the angle revolved around two people: Chris Benoit and AJ Styles.
When they met in the ring for the first time, AJ Styles was a snotty punk heel who believed the world owed him, while Benoit was the example of professionalism for ECW. AJ Styles had been on a mission to prove himself worthy of the main event, and had choked in big-time matches due to his cockiness. Benoit was looking to overthrow the obnoxious ECW Champion, Chris Jericho. It would be the last time they would
Benoit would go on to win the ECW World Title a couple months later. Over the next two months, as he fended off Jericho, something started to happen to ECW: it was invaded. Christian Cage ... Matt Hardy ... Randy Orton ... Trish Stratus ... Batista. When Ted DiBiase came in, the pieces fell into place: the Evil Empire, DiBiase's group, dedicated to bringing an end to the reborn ECW, had arrived, and was going to dismantle ECW ... with the help of their crown jewel, Chris Benoit. Randy Orton would go on to win the TV Title, Trish Stratus would win the Women's Title, and Cage & Hardy, dubbed The Titans, would win the Tag straps. Benoit would even bring Bret Hart out of retirement to watch his back. ECW was left without any championships of their own, thoroughly outmatched and outgunned.
Except for AJ Styles, the man whom Chris Benoit couldn't defeat. Benoit extended an invitation to Styles to join the Empire. Styles wanted no part of Benoit; for his refusal to join, the Empire beat down Styles ... but Styles kept getting back up. And when he went after the Empire the next week and the next week and the next week, and got beaten down again, he got back up ... and won the admiration of the audience. His arrogance became confidence, his cockiness became determination, and he publically declared Benoit to be #1 on his hit list.
Benoit, afraid of Styles, threw every member of the Empire at Styles. Orton was dispatched. Sean Morley was put down. JBL was brought in to take care of him, and failed. Bret Hart was sent to dismantle him, and when Styles got past him, Benoit turned on his mentor. The Titans were sent after him, and Styles got past them.
Benoit, meanwhile, used his legions to keep his title from worthy competitors. Cactus Jack came off an injury and retirement to try and dethrone Benoit, to no avail. Bret failed, as did Rhino, Eddie Guerrero and Chris Jericho. Two of ECW's most stalwart icons, Taz and Tommy Dreamer, not only failed, but were sent into retirement based on their losses. For almost a year, Benoit skated and skirted by challenge after challenge ...
... until there was no one left. Styles had proven himself, and had Benoit cornered. Styles pinned Benoit in a tag match to remove all doubt--Styles was the savior of ECW. And at November 2 Remember, a year after Benoit had won the belt, Styles fulfilled his potential and defeated Benoit for the ECW World Title. A rematch one month, made a ladder match, cemented what everyone knew: AJ Styles was the man, the new face of ECW.
Benoit demanded one more shot; Styles decided to put Benoit's game back in his face: Evil Empire vs. ECW, WarGames. If Benoit's team won, he would get another shot with whatever stips he wanted. If ECW won, the Empire was done.
Three Styles Clashes later, the Empire was defeated, and Benoit was finished.

~Although, I think, by the time it's all said and done, my current main event story in ROH will be better.
