I mentioned somewhere in my diary that my local area was having a wrestling event; Reality Rumble 2008. This was a fundraiser event, where the proceeds would go the special education class at my old high school (Spotswood High). I haven't been to a wrestling show in about ten years because really, wrestling rarely comes around to where I live. You can check out some of the highlights of the show here.
Some random thoughts and what-not...
- Prior to the event, they had a video montage playing of KYDA Pro, explaining the history and what-not. Mickie James and Sonjay Dutt both got their start in the wrestling business here (they trained at the school). Some previous KYDA Pro champions include Steve Corino, Tommy Dreamer, and (I kid you not) the Fake Kane!
- There was also a meet & greet autograph session before the show. In addition to autographs from wrestlers (no celebrity autographs for me, except for Jonny Fairplay and Billy Garcia), I got a kiss from Rodeo. ...Some of that may or may not be true.
- There were some audio issues. I had a hard time hearing promos and the ring announcer. The theme music was fine, though.
- Speaking of theme music, Chucky Wynn has the coolest entrance ever. If only he had the video to go with it.
- They didn't show Lance McIntrye being pelted with garbage by the audience. For a crowd of 600, it was close to Bash at the Beach '96-levels. That should have been a highlight...
- There were two instances of fans jumping the guardrail. None of the wrestlers were touched and security was on the scene immediately, but still, seeing some fans go over the barricade was rather surreal.
- I was really annoyed by the audience at times. If a masked wrestler was in the ring, people would shout out "Do a 619!" Please, I'd rather let the guy be himself than a second-rate Rey Mysterio wanna-be.
- The booking of the main event struck me as odd. I won't say I'm better than the promoter (he did send the fans home happy) but I would have booked the match and finish differently.
- Originally the match was supposed to be a 3 vs. 3 match, with Chucky Wynn on the face team (Coach Dodson/Jonny Fairplay) and Lance McIntrye on the heel team. I don't know why they took them out of the match...
- Jonny Fairplay should be a heel. And yes, he did botch that atomic drop. That, or it was just one weird move.
- I'd have had Coach Dodson get the pinfall. Michele Deighton pedigree'ing Tim Lawler was rather lame. It was even lamer seeing Fairplay get the pin. At least let the hometown guy get the pin, as opposed to being put through a table near the end.
- Fairplay did the 5 Knuckle Shuffle at one point...and it was so much better than Cena's. Having a steel chain wrapped around his fist helped.
Overall, a good show that was rather enjoyable. The end turned me off, but that's only a minor gripe. I was surprised to see a few of the wrestlers (Phil Brown and Pinnacle Sean Patrick) in EWR. Their stats are decent-good, but some time in development couldn't hurt.
